Representatives from the Pierce College Associated Students Organization will be attending a leadership conference in Sacramento this weekend.
They will be attending the annual conference of the California Community College Student Affairs Association (CCCSAA). This year’s theme is “Get Up, Stand Up, Lead.”
The conference provides student government members with leadership seminars as well as skills and techniques on how to lobby, according to Brad Saenz, faculty adviser to ASO.
Pierce ASO President Shani Simms will be providing an event planning workshop, “Hosting Successful Events,” which aims to provide other students tips for getting the word out about events, gathering volunteers, staying within a budget and more.
Simms said she was surprised she got chosen to host the workshop because she turned in her proposal late, but that “[My] workshop was the only one of its kind in the whole conference.”
Simms is expecting up to 200 students to attend her event.
The conference will feature keynote speakers from the movie “The Color of Fear,” a film which examines race relations in America. The speakers, Victor Lewis and Hugh Vasquez, will be discussing race and ethnicity and the role they play in students’ lives.
Entertainment including stand-up comedy, magic shows and evening dances featuring a live DJ will be provided to the attendees of the conference.
ASO members will fly out to Sacramento today and will return on Sunday.
