Brahmas shut down by Ventura

Pierce College women’s basketball lost their season high third consecutive game Saturday in an embarrassing home loss to powerhouse Ventura College.

The reigning Western Conference Champion Ventura College Pirates sealed their undefeated record in conference play as they beat up on Pierce 79-47.

The Brahmas took their only lead in the game early as freshman Candyse Farmer hit a jumper to put Pierce up 5-4.

The Pirates would respond quickly and aggressively nonetheless as they put up 14 unanswered points halfway through the first half.

The score going into halftime was 45-25, Ventura which might’ve dropped the morale of the Brahmas.

 “When your down by so much it’s hard.” said Farmer.

Ventura sophomore Chanelle Brennan who led all scorers with 22 points helped acquire and keep the lead for the Pirates.

“She (Brennan) runs to the rim quicker than any player I’ve coached.” said Ventura Coach Ned Mircetic. “We prepared for a real physical game against Pierce College, as we spent the whole week running.”

That running showed on the court as Ventura had a great amount of fast break points which reflected on the scoreboard.

Pierce had their fair share of shots as well as they attempted 71 field goals but were only able to knock down 17 which really held them back from making any kind of comeback.

“We don’t transition very well and Ventura gets into their offense as well as anyone.” said Pierce Coach Jim Couch.

Pierce leading scorer Tessondra Williams who finished with only 14 points was unable to play significant minutes due to a nagging swollen left ankle.

The Brahmas will try to end their losing streak Wednesday on the road as they play in Oxnard against Oxnard College at 5 p.m.
