Brahmas Win at the Buzzer

Steven Akana

The Pierce College women’s basketball team ends their season in dramatic fashion with Pierce point guard Tess Williams making a 15 foot jump shot at the final buzzer giving them a 68-66 win over Allan Hancock College Bulldogs Saturday.

Williams, who wore No. 10 in honor of injured teammate Jessica LogoLogo, was thinking of the Citrus game from last year, only this time she was told by head coach Jim Couch to take the shot.

“I knew I was going to make it before I took the shot,” said Williams.

“It was a great finish for a sophomore (Williams), possible MVP of the league, to knock it down, a 15 ft jump shot for the win” said Couch.

The Brahmas, who celebrated Sophomore Night to honor second year players, LogoLogo, Taylor Reed, Samantha Velasco, and Williams, who will not be playing for Pierce next season.

The Bulldogs, who came into the game with an overall record of 4-18 and a Western State Conference record of 1-8.

At one point in the second half of the game, the Bulldogs lead was as many as 8 points, but the Bulldogs could not hold on to the lead due in part to Pierce’s defense stepping up.

Pierce had a brief scare in the second half when leading scorer Williams went down after tripping on another girl’s foot and took a minute to get back up.

“I just needed a break, it hurt for a second,” said Williams.
According to Williams, the Brahmas really played like a team and despite having a lot of turnovers and mistakes in the game they were able to pull it together and win.
Pierce finished their season with a 14-13 overall record and a 5-5 Western State Conference record. Overall it was a pretty disappointing season for the Brahmas.

“We were not able to hide our weaknesses all season long. We should have been 24-3,” said Couch.

“We have a lot of talent. We have people who can score and do different things,” said Couch.
