Assistant head women’s basketball coach, Ralph Wesson is excited for the new South Gym reopening.
“It’s a 1000 percent better for the athletes,” said Wesson. “I can get my whole team doing reps at one time.”
The Fitness Center hosted an event for faculty and staff to announce the re-opening of the South Gym on Monday Feb. 22. .
As attendees viewed the new facility, complimentary Jamba Juice was supplied.
“We really want faculty and staff to know were open again,” said Bob Lofrano. “The gym has been closed for a year.”
A Biggest Loser Competition will be held for faculty and staff in March. A prize will be awarded to the winning staff member of the competition.
The new South Gym was completely renovated and is now open for the Pierce public. Now, it’s fully equipped with state of the art equipment, along with a new extension that can fit about 200 people in the gym. The estimated cost of this project was $5 million.
This amazing new facility may be used by home and away teams.
“It’s really nice, we’ve never had that before,” said Wesson. “It’s not only good for students and faculty it’s a great recruiting tool.”
Matt Hanks was recently hired as a fitness coordinator.
“I pretty much know how to train athletes, that’s what I was brought here for,” said Hanks.
Students must be enrolled in one of the fitness classes or a staff member in order to use the facility.
Classes take place in the mornings to Pierce students. Then it opens exclusively for student athletes from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The fitness center is open to staff on Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. and Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
