The Media Arts Department will kick off its Speaker Series today with Doug Mitchell, the founder and lead manager of “next generation radio” at NPR.
Mitchell has worked for NPR for more than 21 years, and for the last 15 has worked with rising college journalists and early career professionals in partnership with media/journalism organizations, designing and executing radio and then multimedia training boot-camps, according to his biography.
Today, Mitchell continues to work with future journalists, as well as acting as a personal
mentor/agent for those who have been through his programs as they search, land and maintain or even switch their careers.
He is just the first of five speakers already scheduled, including L.A. Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke and “Phineus and Ferb” creator Dan Povenmire.

Thursday, March 25 at 11 a.m.— Dan Povenmire, creator of the hit animated Disney Channel series “Phineus and Ferb.” Povenmire has also written episodes of “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Rocko’s Modern Life,” in addition to directing episodes of “Family Guy.”
Wednesday, April 14 at 6 p.m.— Bill Plaschke, sports columnists for the Los Angeles Times. Plaschke was named National Sports Columnist of the Year by the Associated Press and National Headliners during his 21st year with the L.A. Times. He has
been a Pulitzer Prize entrant and his work has been featured in several editions of the annual “Best American Sports Writing” book. Plaschke is also a regular on the ESPN daily talk show, “Around The Horn.”
Upcoming: Chris Ledesma, music editor for The Simpsons. Ledesma has edited every episode of The Simpsons, which started on Fox in 1989.
