Q/A with the stars of the Play

Diana Garcia / Roundup

“The Importance of being Earnest”, the lead actor Michael Hovance was looking for a challenging role to act on and he fit the perfect part to play his character. He’s prepared for it and his character has so much going underneath.

Q: Can you describe your character?
A: He lives a double life; he is Ernest in town, but Jack in the country. His got a big house and his guardian to an 18-year-old girl named Cecily and he has to be very serious when he is the guardian, a mentor.  Since he is always serious he pretends to have a younger brother in London name Ernest and gets into a lot of trouble.  And so when he goes to London he becomes Ernest.  Then he meets this lovely girl named Gwendolen and decides to propose.  He is 29 years old. It is a Language based play and the new Victorian Shakespeare.

Q: What makes the actor truly great when playing the character?
A:  It is fun to play and the heart of the play is Jack.  Ernest and Jack are friends for a reason and they have a lot of fun together.  Jack has more depth and has more going on for him because of the double life.  But, Gwendolens mother Lady Braknele doesn’t want them getting married.  The use of language is so rich and friendly.

Q: Did anything embarrassing or unexpected that happen to you on stage?
A: Nothing really embarrassing about it just fun.

Q: Where the rehearsals difficult?
A: No. We meet four times a week and began rehearsing in January.  The play is wicked fun…wicked good.

Q: Your dreams and goals as an actor?
A: I want to be on the stage of London and do professional theatre.  The Language is just fantastic.  The interacting with the audience and the energy you get, you feed off the audience.

Another role being played by Dana ________ as Gwendolen was also looking for a challenging part in which is grateful to have been given the opportunity to prove herself to be an amazing actress and have a good time.  She shares with us her feelings about the play.

Q: Can you describe your character?
A: Gwendolen was brought up in London Society by her mother also known as Lady Braknele who disapproves of my liking with Jack.  It has been said in the play that they flirt shamelessly.
He tries to propose and God help him he doesn’t know. She tells him “This is how it’s done in proper society and said to him If you’re going to propose to me you have to do it a certain way, how society expects it.  That’s what makes it so funny.  It’s the Ludicrousness of it all.

Q: What makes the actor truly great when playing the character?
A: The character has so much going underneath.
You must be precise because it is somewhat like Shakespeare.  You can’t mess up great Literature.

Q: Did anything embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage?
A: Something about comedy, if you don’t feel stupid or awkward you’re doing something wrong.  You can’t be afraid to go there.  The talent caliber will knock your socks off.

Q: Your dreams and goals as an actor?
A: I’m currently on television, but I am working behind the camera.  And it makes me want to do theatre even more.  There is nothing like a live performance.  You only get one chance intheatre.
