Dear Indifferent Youth,
Ignorance is not bliss.
Your diminishing concern with the world you live in is alarming.
There are far greater stands to take then whether to be a member of team Edward or team Jacob.
How about the elections in Iraq? Our failing economy? Healthcare? Ethnic violence in Nigeria?
The world is often an ugly place.
However, it is the world we live in, and it is what we make of it.
If the status of this world infuriates you, turn your passion into action.
If it does not, it is time you start reading.
A world struggling with constant political strife and social inequalities requires voices of dissent.
College students especially have a lot to fight for.
… And some are.
A national day of protest occurred Thursday. Students at high school and college campus’ across the country conducted rallies and walkouts to show their disapproval of the $1 billion in educational budget cuts to the California state university system.
Events such as these are the civic duty of all citizens of the United States. The rights to peaceably assemble and petition the government are expressly advocated in the First Amendment to The Constitution.
The tragedy is that many of the students “taking place” in the protest were probably more interested in the chance to miss class and get caught on camera than the opportunity to make a difference.
There is not doubt that true activists were present, but the percentage was likely rather small.
President Barack Obama’s largest campaign goal, overhaul of the healthcare system, is another issue you must be involved in.
Regardless of political position on the topic, the approval or failure of this legislation will impact the country for years and years to come.
History happens everyday and you’re missing it.
Instead, you sit at home on TMZ.com, reading about irrelevant celebrity news and mindlessly chatting on Facebook.
Do not let another day pass.
Stand up.
Be heard.
Respectfully,
Concerned Peer
