iPad – Over-hyped and overrated

Bradley Rouse/Roundup

I love my iPod. My iPod Classic is one of three things I never leave my house without. However, I noticed that the upcoming iPad is nothing more then an oversized, glorified iPod Touch; something that I think just is not necessary for a consumer to purchase.

After making their Nano and Shuffle brand smaller, I was surprised that Apple would bring something to the table like the iPad.

The tablet, which is bigger then the iPod touch, still runs the same OS as the iPhone and iPod Touch.

This means only one application can be used at a time, which could be a hassle avoided by using any old computer.

The apps are still useful, however the size of the iPad will limit the mobility of the product. The ease of whipping out your iPhone to find the nearest Starbucks or Pizza Hut will not be there with the iPad. Plus the lack of Adobe Flash on the product means no Flash sites, no streaming videos, and the worst thing of all, no Farmville.

We all know how Apple loves how to jack up the prices for their new products then put out another model of said products that has double the memory for the same price. Also, with the various sizes and types (6) and the prices that go up and down the board (starting at $499 and ending at $829) it could possibly have buyers “lost in translation” trying to find the right version of the device.

Apple is claiming that the iPad is “The best way to experience the web, emails, photos and video. Hands down.” I am not speaking for the rest of the world but the “best way” to experience the web, emails and photos for me would be on a computer and the “best way” to experience video would not be the on the 9.7 inch screen of a iPad, but maybe something 500 times that size with surround sound, a bucket of popcorn and some friends.

You could buy a nice laptop or a projector for the same price as the most expensive iPad. If you truly desire an iPad, go get one. I am not trying to stop you. However, my personal opinion is this: DO NOT waste your money on the iPad if you have any of the following items:

         Laptop
         iPhone or iPod Touch
         Student Loans
         A family to feed
Phone bill, electric bill, gas bill, etc.

I just cannot see a person shelling out hundreds of dollars on something that is not needed on a daily basis. There are so many more important things that you need to spend your money on like your electric bill. If you are spending all your money on new ipads then how can you be sure that you can afford to pay your electric bill? This is something which you need to make sure that you keep an eye on, otherwise you might be low on funds one month. If you find that your electric bill is becoming too expensive, then it might be time to look for a new electric provider though (why not check out these Reliant Energy plans). There are plenty of different providers out there, so you’ll easily find one that you like. Changing providers means that you might get a cheaper electric bill at the end of the month and this is something which everyone should be aiming for anyway.

There are other ways that you can get a cheaper electric bill though, for starters you shouldn’t leave all the lights on, that much is obvious. But also, what you probably haven’t thought about is keeping things like an iPad fully charged. That will cost you a lot more then you realize, which means that you’ll have spent money actually buying the iPad, and then you’ll have spent more money trying to keep it alive. It’s just not worth it. Instead, you should just be aiming to get a lower electric bill – that will at least keep you happy. Particularly if it means that you don’t have to budget that month since you won’t be spending as much!
