Softball lost its 14th consecutive game Thursday the 11th.Brahmas were defeated with an final score of 6-0 by the Oxnard Condors. But a players post game comments exemplifies their poor performance.
“You can tell who’s dedication is there and who doesn’t have dedication,” said Ana Izaguirre, 3rd baseman and pitcher. “The game started off at about a 9 and ended about a 5.”
The “bunting and slapping” are the alleged weaknesses of the team.
Practice makes perfect, but “it has to start with people coming to practice,” said Izaguirre.
According to Izaguire there are 5 people who have dedication to the team. “Me #32, #12(Alex Hayes), #7(Heather Krahling), #6(Jasmine Carrasco), #21(Kristi Ramirez), ” said Izaguirre.
“They don’t realize its college ball, and not just for fun,” said Izaguirre.
During the game the Brahmas were plagued by the same mistakes they have made all season.
For example in the first inning Brystal Hood batting for Oxnard popped up a bunt attempt and it fell through three Brahma players for a hit.
Hood later stole second, then third and scored on an overthrow by catcher Alex Hayes.
Later in the game a ball hit to Pierce right fielder Nicole Harvey was misplayed and as a result Oxnard scored two runs on an inside the park homerun. After that play the score was 5-0.
Later in the seventh inning Kandice Amaro of Oxnard tripled and then scored on a single by Jessica Shaw. Ending the scoring at 6-0.
“We only played about a 7, we didn’t wake up until the fourth,” said Bob Zappina, Oxnard coach. “Because of the opponents record they thought it would be easy. So I don’t think they played serious until they realized they could loose the game.”
The weakness of this team was “focus and lack of speed,” said Zappina.
That can only be overcome by “drilling into them and reminding them to stay focused,” said Zappina.
Pierce was constantly being harassed by the Condors base runners. Which apparently was not enough for their coach.
“We wish we had faster kids to create chaos,” said Zappina.
