Let there be light

Daylight savings is upon us once more, bringing with it an extra hour of sunlight.

This added sunshine is greatly appreciated because well, something is better than nothing.

When the sun sets, there are areas of our campus that are left in almost complete darkness.

Students who only have classes during the day aren’t bothered by this, but night students are only all too familiar with it.

For example, the walkway from the Village to Parking Lot 1 is pitch-black. It is difficult to see even a few feet ahead, let alone anybody who could be lying in wait.

There are no light fixtures.

Yes, the Sheriff’s office is located nearby, but it’s wishful thinking to believe that this is a deterrent to anyone who truly wants to commit a crime.

Our campus, often cited as the safest in the Los Angeles Community College District, is not as safe as one would imagine.

Earlier this semester a man was attacked by assailants in one of the parking lots.

More recently, a pipe bomb was found in the farm area, which had to be detonated by the LAPD.

There are dangers around us whether we like to admit it or not, but if even one incident is to occur due poor lighting, it would be one too many.

The solution is simple: install lights.

The possible dangers are too great to simply ignore this problem.

We shouldn’t be left in the dark. Not in our studies, and especially not on the way back home.
