Absurd Arizonans

Dear Absurd Arizonans,

No longer will your home be known as the Grand Canyon state. From this point forward, Arizona should be dubbed the state with no sense.

Last week, Gov. Jan Brewer agreed to install a law that would aid in the control of illegal immigration into Arizona. The state has every right to address an issue they deem worthy.

However, racial profiling is too much.

The law demands police to question people about their right to be in the United States.

How does something like that work in practice? Are random people and families approached and asked for proof of legal status?

Actually… yes. That is exactly what authorities in Arizona are now supposed to do.

This is preposterous. Governments at any level should be filled with men and women of both high educational and moral standing. Unfortunately, the people of Arizona do not enjoy this type of leadership.

One of the major issues with this law lies within the wording.

Questioning is to be directed at those “suspected” of being illegal. And since there is no way of knowing if someone is in the state lawfully, the power will be granted to law enforcement to decide if a person appears illegal.

What does illegal look like?

The consensus fear seems to be that the South American population is those that will qualify. The Latin community always receives this stigma. Laws like this will only further their stereotype as border-jumpers, and ignore the contributions they make to the country.

As expected, the bill’s passing came with heavy protest. Government officials throughout the country, most notably President Barack Obama, have criticized the law, calling it “misguided.”

It is time for the state to own up to this mistake and begin damage control.

Before the landslide gets any worse, and the perception of the state falls any further, something must be done. Things will only get worse if state appellate courts or the United States Supreme Court is forced to get involved.

The law goes against everything that this country was founded on.

Powerful phrases like “Innocent until proven guilty” were coined to protect people against usurpations like these.

I have faith that the cries of the nation will be heard and that Arizona will do what is right. Strike this law down.

Respectfully,

Concerned Citizen of the World
