Talia Elmalia, 18, took on the position as Associated Students Organization (ASO) club counsel president on Friday, promising Pierce College students her support for future clubs.
Elmalia has spent her entire life in Calabasas, Calif. Having been the oldest sister of four children, leadership qualities have become second nature to her.
“I chose this because I had a lot of ideas in mind,” said Elmalia, “not only to encourage students to create clubs but to help students join them.” She became interested in planning events while coordinating activities for the elderly in a hospital.
Elmalia plans to add a club list to the schedule of classes every semester. This way students can see that there are clubs at Pierce and find one that interests them.
Also Elmalia would like to plan a Club Olympic Event where different clubs on campus would compete in athletic events. This event is meant to get the clubs together, get the student body participating, and possibly generate new members and clubs.
According to Brad Saenz, ASO faculty advisor Elmalia has a lot of support. “She is very respected within the ASO,” said Saenz. “She’ll be just fine.”
The current Club Council President, Cindy Gerges supports Elmalia. “It took me by surprise that she wanted to run,” said Gerges. “I do think that she will do a great job and get things done.”
Gerges’ advise to Elmalia, “You have to pick yourself back up and try again, be very persistent”.
Currently, there are all sorts of clubs at Pierce. If students were to have an idea for a club, they should contact the ASO and Elmalia would direct them toward the right path.
“Anyone who wants to start a club should start one,” said Elmalia. “If they are worried about the start up cost,” added Elmalia, “we will find a way to help with the cost.”
