Phillipians Day

Empowerment and clarity swept the audience Thursday during Pierce College’s event “The Philippians Culture” in the Great Hall.

The event started at 12:45 p.m. with a speaker, a UCLA Ph.D. candidate, Carolina San Juan.

San Juan discussed her major, Philippians Popular Culture, an uncommonly found study.

“There is so much more we need to understand about heritage and who we are,” she said.

According to the 2009 Census, Philippians were the second largest culture in Los Angeles, over 25 percent of population, leaving many Americans curious to why it is not available to learn at many colleges.

The speech ended with her saying, “Your knowledge is your power,” allowing the movement needed to get the feel of the Philippians culture.

Posterior to the speech were an abundance of activities including a fashion show, games, and performances by Jason and Anthony Dheneen, Tiff and Kevin Bagnot.

“Dance taught you to fight, the holes in the Philippians Cocoa nut Dance represent holes in the Spanish armor during war,” said San Juan.

The fashion show gave a great taste of Philippians culture and their attire.

Since the event lasted until 4 p.m., food and refreshments were available with a variety of courses available such as; beef tortas, pad thai, pancit canton, and fruit salad with condensed milk.

Among the food were an assorted pictures of toys and clothes along with the history of them. Maria Clara, Holen, Magalatik, and Binaylan Costume were just a few of the many.

“The Philippians Culture event is a great was to get involved with culture, but we should advocate Philippians studies at Pierce,” said San Juan.
