A proposal for a grant-funded Associated Dean of Student Success and Basic Skills Development position was brought to the table for the Pierce College Council to consider at yesterday’s meeting in the College Services Building Conference Room.
The basic skills initiative, which was passed two years ago, provided money to Pierce in order to grow their student success and basic skills development committee.
The money from the basic skills initiative has been paying for a full time director to run the program as it has been expanding.
The director’s contract expires at the end 2010 and cannot be renewed, since that is one of the conditions of the initiative.
The committee and the academic senate have both supported the position of a director for the student success and basic skills development committee.
The position is needed in order to manage the budget and manage the projects supported by the budget which all go towards helping students improve their academic performance.
The intent is to fund the new dean position through initiative funds.
