A healthy Brahmas Volleyball team looks to re-capture past success under the coaching of Nabil Mardini, determined to rebound from an injury-plagued 2009 season.

An always-energetic Lady Brahmas team continued their perfect season as they dominated their home opener.

The Brahmas (3-0) won their match against the Moorpark Lady Raiders (1-3) in the South Gym, Wednesday night.

Moorpark, their Northwest division opponent, beat the Brahmas last year.

“It’s a good rivalry game,” said Pierce setter Julianna Hicks. “Coming back from last year, its awesome to take this game.”

Pierce has had a tendency this season to start off slow but finish strong.

That slow start was evident in Wednesday night’s match. The Lady Brahmas won the first game 25-20, the second game 25-19 but lost the third game 22-25 before finishing off their counterparts in game four, 25-20.

“That is something we need to work on,” Brahma Samantha Potter said. “Something we need to fix.”

The Brahmas committed 20 errors during the game three loss, compared to only three by the Lady Raiders, mostly because of net violations.

“I wouldn’t say it was an intense match against Moorpark, it was more like an intense match against our selvess,” Potter said in regards to the errors.

“Maybe it was just being too aggressive, we have never netted like that before,” coach Mardini said.

“We have a tendency to start slow, make our errors in the game and then when our backs are against the wall we decide to pick it up,” continued Mardini.

The Lady Raiders did not make it easy for Pierce.

“Moorpark did a good job blocking and had a lot of hustle in them,” Mardini said. “They frustrated our offense a little, they waited for us to make errors.”

Moorpark Coach Steve Burkhart gave credit to the tough Brahma offense.

“They are a good squad,” Burkhart said. “Their serve is pretty tough and their outside hitting is tough, so those two elements are better then ours right now.”

The Brahmas will hit the road for their next two matches, Friday and Saturday, in the San Diego Mesa College Tournament.
