With two games remaining in the season and with their destiny in their own hands, the Pierce Football team survived a grueling game against Southwest College in Shepard Stadium for homecoming, Saturday night. But on this night, the game with playoff implications had a very special sentiment for star wide receiver, Kenny Davis.
Davis dedicated the game to a friend who recently passed away in a car accident. “It gave me motivation knowing that she is watching over me,” said Davis. “Everything was going by real quick and I appreciated every play.”
The Brahmas overcame a cold night and an explosive Cougars offense that saw the first quarter start with a 20-0 deficit.
Head Coach for the Brahmas, Efrain Martinez, saw this coming. “I tolled the guys, two things are going to happen, we are going to go up 21 nothing or they will go up 21 nothing,” said Martinez.
Pierce College outscored Southwest College by 31 points, only to loose the lead in the fourth quarter. The forced overtime saw both teams trade touchdowns and field goals. Finally, Pierce kept the Cougar offense at bay and Sandoval, Kicked the game winner to finish the game.
The team pulled it off with a 41-38 win, leading to a top seed showdown against Valley College.
Meanwhile, the Pierce College supporters were treated to a great game that saw explosive offense and great defense as well as hard hits. It was a great showing for the final home game of the season.
“We gave the fans their moneys worth, the game was long and we had to pull together as a team, our defense played real good and it helped as a lot,” said Davis. “Our Kicker, Steve Sandoval, he came through with a pair of field goals, right at the end.”
The chemistry between the offense is what pulled out the tough win, which saw the Brahmas score 31 straight points and then only loose an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter. “Exavier Johnson, the Brahma quarterback, and I know the game real well; we know where each other are going to be,” Davis said. “I know where he his going to put the ball and he knows where am going to be.”
With only one game remaining and the top seed on the line, Brahma Head Coach knows the implications of the game against Valley College. “We are 4-1 in the road, we are better in the road then we are at home,” said Martinez. “We have the best wide receivers in the country and I think we have the two best quarterbacks in the country, if we can put it all together then its pretty hard to stop our offense, only we can stop our offense and we do a pretty good job at that.”
The Brahmas will have time to prepare for the biggest game of the season as they have a Bye for the upcoming week. The following week, Nov. 13, will see the Brahmas take on Valley College at Valley, for the Conference Championship.
