From the Bullpen – Leading off

Lorrie Reyes / Roundup

As the spring semester begins, students are mostly thinking about crashing those last classes for graduation, where the heck am I going to park or, if you’re new, where the heck is my class?

But spring always makes me think of the beginning of the baseball season, the start of March Madness and the final stretch of basketball and hockey seasons.

At Pierce College those same things are happening. Well, minus the hockey.

Pierce’s baseball team will try to improve on last year’s second place finish in the Western State Conference South and chance to get back to the playoffs.

On the women’s side of the diamond, Pierce’s softball team can go nowhere but up. 2010’s season left the Brahmas without a win in the WSC Gold. But 2011 has already brought more wins than last year by starting out 4-3 through Valentine’s Day.

The men’s volleyball team bounced back after their home-opener loss to Orange Coast with a double-header win against Grossmont and San Diego Mesa on Saturday. They are currently 4-1 according to the Pierce College athletic schedule.

The Tennis and Swim teams have yet to have a record this year. I will be keeping my eye out on their matches and meets.

Although the spring semester has begun both the women’s and men’s basketball teams at Pierce are playing their final games. Both teams will play only two more regular season games before playoffs start.

As of Feb. 10 the lady Brahma’s basketball team were tired for second in the WSC North with Moorpark. The men’s team has struggled in conference with a 4-5 record as of Feb. 10, according to California Community College Athletic Association.

Join me each week throughout the spring semester I will take a look at our collegiate sport teams and give you the break down of how they did and if they can do better.
