Eyes open on campus – Robots, shuttles and the news

Another week means another chance to discuss new things on campus, with the first issue of the Roundup on news stands, a new robotics team and a free shuttle service that makes the hill easier to conquer.

Pierce College has formed its first-ever robotics team that will be competing against other college campuses in the region.

The club which meets in the CAN Lab in room 3808 meets on Mondays and Fridays. They build robots for competitions where they must be able to pick up rings and place them on posts, and climb ladders.

This is a great example of the times we live in. The technology to not only create robots that function remotely as well as independently but also to compete against other colleges is amazing.

To think what events might be like in just a few years is enough to boggle the mind. I hope that funding for these types of events never run dry.

For students who are tired of making the walk up the hill to the performing arts building there is now a cure. Many of you may have noticed the new shuttle bus that’s been driving around campus.

This new free shuttle which operates Monday through Thursday. The shuttle runs from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. It gives free rides to students who have classes in the Performing Arts Building to and from their classes.

Though I agree this is a fantastic perk for students I can’t help but wonder where the money for this shuttle comes from. Granted it’s a relatively small cost at $37 per hour for the service.

However with the college straining in this time of budget cuts and classes being canceled at an alarming rate, not to mention the increasing cost of classes, one must wonder if it’s really cost efficient.

In the end this program may not be around for very long so my advice to students is take advantage while you can. With parking the way it is this service will definitely come in handy while it lasts.

Finally don’t forget to pick up your copy of the Roundup hot off the press every Wednesday on campus. We at the paper do our best to provide unbiased up to date info.

Be in the know and keep your eyes open to what is happening with your education.
