Student Veteran Organization holds barbecue fundraiser

The Student Veteran Organization grilled hamburger patties in the Mall in an effort to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.

“[This is] not your grandma’s bake sale,” said 30-year-old club president Christopher Sorbello.

All burgers were sold for $3 apiece. Students were also able to purchase meals consisting of a single or double cheeseburger, a small bag of chips and a bottle of water for $5.

The club was able to raise a total of $878, according to 23-year-old psychology major Juan Sirri.

“Today’s fundraiser went better than the last time,” said club member Geo Castaneda. “There were a lot more people, and we raised a lot of money.”

The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote awareness of the country’s injured service men.

According to Karl DeVries, the club’s liaison to the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Wounded Warrior Project is the most active of its kind in offering physical rehabilitation and council to veterans.

“[The service men] are giving their lives so that we can have freedom and opportunities to go to school,” said Castaneda. “They deserve all the help they can get.”
