‘Tertulia’ on its way to publication

“Tertulia,” a year-long literary project headed by the Latin American Culture & Literature Club, is ready for publication.

“Tertulia” is a 90-page bilingual compilation of about 30 written works and seven artworks, all of which were submitted by Pierce College students. The student-created stories, poems, song lyrics, and art are divided among four sections: identity, love, society and politics.

“Even though we keep calling it a magazine, it’s actually more of a book,” said 24-year-old Andrea Gordillo, the club’s president.

According to 22-year-old club member Daniela Gordillo, the Latin American Culture & Literature Club hopes to get “Tertulia” published by the end of this month and available to for purchase by the first week of June.

It costs around $2,500 to publish the book, according to Florencia Orlandoni, club member and editor of “Tertulia.”

In addition to hosting two major events each semester and holding numerous fundraisers, the most recent of which is a sliced fruit sale held Tuesday and Wednesday, the club plans on requesting financial assistance from the Associated Students Organization.

“We got $800 [from ASO] back when ‘Tertulia’ was still a project,” said Orlandoni as she addressed the student government during Tuesday’s ASO Senate meeting. “We’re asking for $800 more.”

“Tertulia” is currently available for pre-sale at the price of $10 a copy. According to Orlandoni, it costs the club $9.95 to make each copy of the book.

“It’s not about making money,” Andrea Gordillo said. “It’s all about showcasing the students’ work.”

Once the book is published, the club plans on either holding another event or setting up a booth to publicize it. Members are also currently making arrangements with the management of the Student Store for their books to be sold there.

“We want to show everyone that the Latin community [at school] has a voice,” Orlandoni said.
