Giant inflatable slides, a dunk tank and music provided by 97.1 AMP radio were all part of the Associated Student Organization (ASO)-sponsored club carnival that was hosted on campus at the Rocky Young Park Thursday afternoon.
“It’s a social event for students and a way for clubs to recruit and fundraise,” said ASO Advisor Brad Saenz. “We have about 50 registered clubs this semester and if students want to learn more about them they are posted on our website.”
Even in the triple digit heat during midterms week, students gathered on the grass where they could play carnival games or get free henna tattoos provided by the different clubs and the ASO.
“Everything is free except for the food,” said EJ Tormes, the ASO club council president. “It’s been a while since ASO has done something like this and it’s a fun way for students to interact and unwind during such a stressful week.”
Students in the mood for brownies and freshly spun cotton candy were able to head to the French Club’s booth where their treasurer Maria Urroz welcomed all students to attend a meeting for fun or free French tutoring.
“We’re really welcoming of anyone who wants to join, you don’t have to be French, we’ll teach you,” said Urroz with a smile.
Other clubs at the carnival included the Gama Sigma Honor Society and the Pre-Veterinary Club among many others.
Students Katie Kargari and Josh Romo attended the carnival after seeing one of the fliers posted on campus. While some students choose to try their luck at tightrope walking, they stuck to tossing footballs into three inflatable baskets while at the carnival.
“It feels like it’s been a long semester, so this has been fun,” said Romo.
