Prop 8 overturned

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional early this morning.

The appeal would allow same-sex couples in the state of California to wed. However, as the day progressed, the Los Angeles Times announced that the U.S. Supreme Court might not actually acknowledge the appeal

“I think it’s great,” said Rachel Schepler, a sign language interpretation major. “I have a handful of gay and lesbian friends.”

Schepler also conveyed how Proposition 8 reflected on the entire state. According to this student, California is known as such an open-minded state that the fact that the ban was passed at all is “kind of embarrassing.”

Aaron Young, a Pierce College student with an undecided major, agrees that the appeal of the ban is probably for the best. “People don’t make the choice to be gay,” said Aaron Young, a Pierce College student. “It shouldn’t be a problem.”

“I think it’s great to allow [same-sex couples] the freedoms that are afforded to other people,” said Barbara Anderson dean of academic affairs.

As someone who has been married for 28 years, Anderson understands that whether a marriage is legally recognized or not, the bond between two people is something that should be “honored, celebrated, and respected.”
