Invincible volleyball team stands 49-0

Los Angeles Pierce College’s women’s volleyball team  (15-0) remained undefeated by defeating the Citrus College Owls (6-4) Friday at South Gym.

The Brahmas won in straights sets against Cirtus (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) and improved their winning streak to 49 matches won in a row.

Pierce still holds the number one ranking in the state dating back to December 6, 2010, according to the California Community College Women’s Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Brahmas won their last game against Mission College in straight sets as well, which makes a total of 14 sweeps during the 2012 season.

Sophomore outside hitter Danetta Boykin led the team with 15 kills on offense, but it wasn’t her best game.

“We were frustrated and did not play our game,” Boykin said. “Our plans for the next game are to control our frustration on the court, play hard and remain calm.”

Head Coach Nabil Mardini was pleased with the victory, yet he felt that there was still more room to improve.

“Our team could have made less errors, passed and transitioned the ball better on offense,” said Mardini.

Sophomore middle Jessica Burns dominated at the net and led her team in blocks. Burns is also second in most blocks in the conference.

“We are going to train harder, and come into the next game with a more positive attitude,” said Burns.

Sophomore setter Janelle Futch kept her team on top, totaling 44 assists in the game. Futch leads her team in assists in the conference.

Citrus held on, leading in the beginning of the third set, but the Brahmas remained calm and came back to win 25-18.

Sophomore outside hitter Sakurako Fujii had 12 kills this game and is leading the conference in aces this season.

“We made bad connections, which left us frustrated, but still played our game,” Fujii said.  “We will play tighter and more as a team in our next match.”

Pierce meets Bakersfield College on Wednesday, and the team has plans to improve on their mistakes.

Pierce has defeated Bakersfield twice this season in both the San Diego Mesa and the Third Pierce invitational tournaments during the championship games.

The team will be on the road to Bakersfield, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
