The Pierce baseball team suffered a demoralizing loss at home against the Cuesta College Cougars Thursday April 11, with the final score of 8-2.
Cuesta started dominated offensively, scoring in the second play of the game and later again in the first inning.
Pierce made a couple of errors that Cuesta capitalized on, allowing them to take extra bases and bring in RBIs.
Pierce’s head coach John Bushart noted the flaws that his team made in the first inning.
“3 errors in the first inning did not set a good tone for the rest of the game,” Bushart said. “We could have done better.”
The Brahma’s were able to score a run in the second inning and again in the fifth, but otherwise struggled offensively against Cuesta’s pitching.
Outfielder Justin Davis reflected on the seven errors which lead to critical plays by Cuesta after the game.
“Too many mistakes early let them get ahead,” Davis said. “We have to piece things together as a team.”
Cuesta played strategic offense and solid defense, bunting for base hits and sacrificing outs for runs.
It wasn’t just the errors Pierce made that hurt the team, but the fact that Cuesta could exploit and make the most of every mistake the Brahma’s made.
Pierce is scheduled to play Cuesta again Saturday April 13 at Cuesta College.
