The Pierce College soccer team, which had mostly been an afterthought at the start of the season, continued its impressive run in Santa Maria, defeating Allan Hancock College 4-1.
The Brahmas got production from a variety of players as sophomore forward Jackie Hilario and freshman forwards Natalia Lopez, Paula Colicci and Cat Spaccia were among the four players to score.
“It’s good to see other players step up,” said Michelle Somers, freshman captain and points leader.
The Brahmas have now won or tied four games in a row and have won five of their last seven.
“The team is starting to come together,” head coach Adolfo Perez said. “The team is now a lot more patient, and right now we are on a roll.”
Spaccia had the play of the game when she got a cross from Somers and then from four yards out, volleyed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
“Willie [head coach William Diaz] told me to go to the middle,” Spaccia said. “Michelle crossed it and I put it in.”
The Brahmas, who were maligned after starting the season 0-2-1, are now playing well now with a 5-3-2 record.
They will be put to the challenge as they play Ventura College at home. Ventura comes in with a record of 6-1-1 and wins for their first two conference games of the season.
According to Perez, the team faces a tough challenge, but “we’ll be ready.”
