The Pierce College women’s basketball team played host from Nov. 29- Dec. 1, as Pierce College was the destination of a basketball tournament.
Entering the tournament in their own home, Pierce head coach Jim Couch said that his team felt “confident.”
Pierce entered the tournament with a 2-1 record, first facing off against LA Harbor College. The brahmas were too much to handle as they opened the tournament with a huge win, defeating LA Harbor 96-63.
Kiana Angel of LA Harbor led her team with 26 points, two rebounds and four assists. This was not enough to stop the brahmas as Monica Jackson did more than her fair share, putting up 34 points with four assists and five steals. Gasia Sarkis followed her with 14 points, 10 rebounds and one assist.
Explaining the game LA harbor coach Ben Turner said that his team fell behind early.
“It’s holiday time and we were playing with a lot of our girls not there,” Turner said. “The guard from Pierce is very experienced… we kept everybody else in check but she got loose. We let her get loose and she did the damage.”
As a team, coach Turner said he felt like his team “matched up pretty good against Pierce.”
“The only thing is, we’ve only had these girls for four months. This is a new program. We just put it back together. Once we get some game experience we’re going to be pretty good.
The following night on Saturday Nov. 30, the brahmas continued their winning ways, beating out LA Trade- Tech, 92-83.
Monica Jackson once again helped lead her team to the victory, scoring 25 points, two rebounds and four assists. The brahmas own Amari Hampton was not far behind her teammate as she scored 24 points with five rebounds.
The brahmas entered game three of the tournament against San Diego Mesa, losing their first game of the tournament, 68-57.
The scoring of Gasia Sarkis was not enough for Pierce, leading her team with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. The brahmas Monica Jackson was right on her heels as she scored 17 points with two assists and three steals.
