Pierce College Theater Department to host “Independence” play

The play “Independence” is wrapping up the semester for the Los Angeles Pierce College Theater Department which began Friday, May 2 in the temporary Performing Arts Complex located on the corner of Mason Avenue and Olympic Drive.

The play, a family drama, was written by Lee Blessing and will be directed by Anita Adcock, a theater arts and dance instructor at Pierce.

“I was looking for something that had really good parts for women,” Adcock said.

Adcock said she wanted something different “to contrast” the previous play the department featured, which was titled “Incorruptible.”

She advises students to attend the show because everyone can relate to having a family.

“Families can either be the anchor that keeps us going or the prison we can’t escape,” Adcock said.

A preview night took place Thursday, May 1, and the opening night was Friday, May 2 at 8 p.m. The play will continue through May 11 but will be shown only on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m.

The cost of entry is $12 for students and seniors and $15 for all others. Tickets may be purchased in person on the day of the event or online at independence.brownpapertickets.com, according to their website.

For those attending the play, free parking will be provided in parking lots 7 and 8.
