The Pierce College men’s volleyball team defeated rival Golden West College in a tough game at home on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Before facing its rival, the mens volleyball team was on a two game losing streak. They lost to Orange Coast College in three sets (18-25, 17-15, 23-25) on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

The Brahmas only won one set in their next loss against Irvine Valley College on Friday, Feb. 13, losing in four sets. (15-25, 20-15, 25-17, 23-25)

After two tough losses, defeating its rival was exactly what Pierce needed to gain confidence for its journey to winning conference.

The team was able to secure the victory in three straight sets. (25-19, 25-16, 27-25)

The history between both teams dates back to 2000 when Pierce head coach Lance Walker competed as a Brahma against Golden West in the State Championships.

“When I played in 2000 we won the Championship against Golden West,” Walker said. “They won five championships in a row and then we won four championships in a row.”

In the first set the Brahmas started out strong with an 11-3 lead. They held off Golden West’s attempts at a comeback when the score reached 20-12 before winning the set 25-19.

The third set had at least four changes with the score being tied five times, but the Brahmas got it done.

“I felt we did really well and did what we were supposed to do,” said freshman outside hitter Chris Pessin. “We just played a solid game all the way around and finished the game off.”

Before this game Pessin was second on the team in points with 51.5 and tied for first in kills with 50. Freshman outside hitter Garrett Degrasse who was first in hits and tied with Pessin in kills, is helping Pessin lead the team to a successful season.

Sophomore opposite Corey Pitt who increased the team’s’ momentum with a kill in the third set, also felt the team did a well in their quick win.

“I feel it was better than last game,” Pitt said. “We played well and the energy was there.”

“We play an imperfect game,” Walker said, “But we try and prepare and focus on what’s most important at the time.”

The Brahmas are currently 3-2 for the season and have a road game Friday, Feb. 20 against Palomar College at 6 p.m.
