Brahmas baseball did it again and won a very close game at their home field, ending the game with a walk-off homerun.
The Brahmas went up against the Cuesta College Cougars on March 18 at the Joe Kelly Field and played a game filled with close calls and tough pitches. The Brahma’s fought hard, and in the end it was worth it. They won with a score of 5 – 4 with a homerun at the bottom of the ninth inning, breaking the tie and securing the win.
Head Coach Bill Picketts was very happy for their win and shared how the team’s determination made the game.
“There’s only one way to feel about that game,” Picketts said. “Excitement and elation. It was a great game, we kept grinding and we kept getting runs in and good bats with two outs.”
The game started off a little rocky for the Brahmas with the Cougars quickly scoring three points by the end of the second inning. But the Brahmas had a great comeback in the fourth.
There was a point in the fourth inning where there were Cougars on every base and there was a strong batter at the plate. But Pitcher Dante Zamudio’s powerful pitches struck him out and gave the opponent their third out, saving the Brahmas from getting even farther behind in the score.
The combination of a strong batter but an even stronger Brahma pitcher saved the first half of the fourth inning. Zamudio was throwing fast pitches and struck many of the opposing batters out.
“I always have a little higher expectations for myself,” Zamudio said. “But I think I did well with keeping my composure and getting out of jams that I got myself into, which was the best thing I could do.”
This was the third game against the Cougars this week. The Brahmas lost the first but they won the second and going off their momentum from their last game they pulled off another win.
“The guys are starting to play a little better,” Picketts said. “They’re starting to trust each other, the guys are starting to perform a little bit better.”
By the end of the eighth inning the Brahmas and the Cougars were tied 4 – 4. Going into the ninth inning, the team was very determined to break the tie in their favor. This showed in how quickly they got their opponents out before they had a chance to score.
The bottom of the ninth inning started and they had gotten two outs by the time Out Fielder Collin Mitchell came to bat. Mitchell hit a homerun and saved the game, securing the Brahmas’ win.
“I got a lot of feelings running through my body right now,” Mitchell said. “I was pretty confident going in there and just looking for a pitch that I can hit and get something going. And it turned out to be a little bit better than I expected.”
The Brahmas’ next home game is on Thursday, March 23 against Oxnard College at 2:30 p.m..
