Cars for the ages

Grandparents, parents, kids, grandkids—most all generations find their way to Supercar Sunday at Pierce College.

Sunday’s event in Lot 7 was Ferrari Day sponsored by Porsche of Woodland Hills, and organizer Dustin Troyan has been putting on Supercar Sundays for more than 20 years.

“I put the event on because I love cars and I love people, and it’s a way to bring people together in a positive way to share passion and friendship,” Troyan said.

Troyan noted the day had just begun and expected strong turnout.

“What people know about Supercar Sunday is we get everybody—Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, hot rods, rat rods, muscle cars, imports, European cars,” Troyan said. “We get everybody, it’s a tremendous community filled with wonderful people.”

Regular attendee Sandy Bettelman brought his Ferrari to the event, a rare and valuable car that had belonged to his late brother for over 40 years.

“You drive it out, take it out once a week, have fun,” Bettelman said. “My brother passed away last year, and he left that for me. So I’m driving it once a week.”

Only 99 units of Bettleman’s Ferrari were produced, sporting a 12-cylinder engine, and in its condition it is worth more than most houses, according to Bettleman.

Local car owner Gary L. Wales brought a car full of stories.

“It’s 86-years-old—that’s pretty good history,” Wales said. “It’s basically a racing car, just a great car, but it’s a very special body, only one in the world. Only car ever in the world to have a door shaped around the wheels.”

An annual charity event, Motor 4 Toys in December, is also organized by Troyan.

“So I started a charitable foundation 20 years ago called Motor 4 Toys (www.motor4toys.com), Troyan said.  “We’re 100 percent charity, there are no salaries. And over the course of the past 20 years, with the help of a lot of kind people, we’ve collected and distributed about seven million dollars worth of toys to children in need all over the state of California.”

Supercar Sundays run from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Lot 7, and the next one will take place on April 14.
