Brahmas say goodbye to two sophomore players in final home game

The Pierce College softball team took an 8-0 loss against Moorpark College after battling against their pitcher at the start of the game.

The Brahmas also recognized two sophomores during their final home game of the season against the Raiders after two progressive seasons, according to Head Coach Brett Marschall.

Kaylie Zenan (#35) and Mary Rios (#6) played their final home game as Brahmas after being a part of softball’s revamp at Pierce.

Pierce hadn’t had a softball team in more than four years and these last two seasons were the start of rebuilding something great, according to Marschall.

“I told them they played a key role in reestablishing softball at Pierce,” Marschall said. “They are the only two who have played both seasons. I told them they should be proud of their legacy.”

The Raiders scored the first run of the game off Brahma’s starting pitcher Kristjana Lewis. Both teams felt the pressure as they tried to rally their players each time they came to bat. Cheers in the stands were heard throughout.

Zenan made contact at her first at bat, but the pop fly was caught resulting in their third out of the first inning. Both teams kept their momentum going trying to get these runs scored.

The Raiders had a team goal of scoring every inning, according to their Head Coach Ashley Colon.

“We put that pressure on our offense, which resulted in our win,” Colon said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game, so our goal as a team was to score every inning.”

Moorpark Raiders Mallory Akhlaghi singled to right field and scored the first RBI of the game.

“We did come out flat, our energy, we weren’t as spunky as we normally are but overall happy with our win,” Akhlaghi said. “We have things we can always work on at practice, but we made it work.”

Alexis Menchaca (#8) had the longest at bat as she battled pitch after pitch against the Raiders but struck out at the end. Cynthia Serrano (#7) is proud to have played with the girls on her team and feels they did well against Moorpark, an undefeated team so far.

“Shout out to our sophomores, they did amazing this whole season,” Serrano said. “I respect them very much and I’m proud I played with them.”

The Pierce softball team will end the season with their final game against Oxnard College on April 23 at 2 p.m. at Oxnard.
