Nineteen horses are being temporarily kept at the Pierce College Farm, after they were evacuated from Malibu due to the ongoing Franklin Fire.
“We are housing them, and all of the horses that are here currently have come from high risk fire areas,” Farm Manager Marcie Sakadjian said. “It’s not safe for them to stay where their barns are.”
Pierce staff are working with Los Angeles County Animal Control to manage the evacuated horses.
“We’re far enough away from danger, and we have a nice, decently large facility,” Sakadjian said.
The Franklin Fire, which is centered about 20 miles away from Pierce, has burned more than 2,800 acres and forced thousands of people to evacuate from the Malibu area.
Pierce has housed evacuated animals in the past. According to Sakadjian, the Pierce Farm housed about 177 large animals during the Woolsey Fire in 2018.
“When people bring their animals here, when there are evacuations, they know that they’ll be well taken care of,” Sakadjian said.
