Pierce College student and singer Tabitha Starr won first place in the Open Mic contest at “Back to School Brahama Style,” on Wed, March 10.

The event featured a fashion show, Open Mic contest, and drink making contest in which students were able to participate.

While the nachos were what many students claimed lured them in, the biggest hit of the entire show seemed to be Starr’s A capella performance of “New York,” by Alicia Keys.

The performance had the crowed calling for an encore after she was named the winner.

Starr said that although winning felt good, the true affirmation of her talent was when the crowd asked her to sing again.

“[She was] really good, she really worked the stage and the crowd,” noted fellow contestant Ellese White, “[She was] the life of the party.”

As the first place prize winner Starr will be featured on a poster in the Student Store for two weeks.

The event had four judges, two of which were students chosen from the crowd. Performances where scored based on a variety of categories.

Student Judge Taylor Reed thought overall all the contestants did well but was a little apprehensive about the drink mixing contest.

“Luckily the worst drink just tasted like water,” Reed said.

The winning drink “Nadilsuh” made by Nadi Montano, will be sold in the Freudian Sip for two weeks starting Monday.

The fashion show featured a variety of Pierce merchandise including: backpacks, flip-flops and sweatshirts which were available at a 20 percent discount to those in attendance.

Raffle tickets were handed out at the door for free with three prizes up for grabs, two Whole Foods gift bags and 10 dollar gift certificate to the Freudian Sip.

While admitting that he came for the free food, student Nam Tran said he enjoyed the event.

“At community colleges everyone comes here and leaves, you don’t usually get to feel the community,” said Tran “It’s nice to see everyone coming together.”

The event was organized by Associated Students Organization President Shani Simms.

Simms called it a big success and noted that it was possibly her best event to date.
