A chilled water pipe was ruptured in the north of Mall construction area on Monday at 10:30 a.m.
The Center for the Sciences, North and South Gyms, and the Child Development buildings were the only four buildings serviced by the Central Plant that remained in service.
The Village area was unaffected, since it’s the only area on campus that is not run by the Central Plant, according to Director of Facilities Paul Nieman.
“It was actually great timing,” said Jessica Ship, a 22-year-old political science major. “I mean, so many of us were out at the rally.”
Of course, not all students were out of class marching; there were still quite a few that were inconvenienced by the lack of water.
“It was a really warm day,” said Fred Ryan, a 33-year-old business major. “It seems like things like this only happen at the worst possible times.”
It is unclear exactly how the pipe was broken, but it is known that it happened as a result of construction.
The pipe was fixed, and the water was back on by 3:30 p.m. that afternoon.
“This hasn’t cost the school any money,” said Nieman. “It broke and the construction crew fixed it.”
