Women’s volleyball gets convincing victory

The women’s volleyball team won its second  Western State Conference-Southern game against West Los Angeles College in three games (25-07, 25-07, 25-15) Friday at Pierce College’s North Gym.

Both Pierce and West L.A. coaches had a similar game plans to keep the focus on their side of the nets.

“We are not worried about what they are doing over there,” said West L.A. head coach Brian Corso, “Pierce is a solid powerhouse, they probably have a few hundred thousand more repetitions at this game  than my girls.”

Since West L.A. is only in its second year of their volleyball program, Pierce College showed their dominance taking all three games in only one hour of play.

“We wanted to take care of our own side and we did that,” said Head Coach Nabil Mardini, “We didn’t play down and that was key.”

Although Pierce showed their strength in all aspects on the court, the girls volleyball team actually let West L.A. in the third game letting them take the first lead in all three games.

“We got in a slump [in the third game], we got ourselves out,” said sophomore team Capitan Reyna Rochin, “but we shouldn’t of let them score that many points in the first place.”

One member of the Brahmas that led Pierce to the landslide victory was Freshman Danielle Shoemaker.

Shoemaker, who at one point in the third game had three aces in a row, had a total of five aces.

“Their passing was a little weak overall,” said Shoemaker “the key is just to let them make the mistakes.”

With this win, this brings the Lady Brahmas to 2-3 record in the WSC Southern Division during the first half of conference play.

Pierce now has to switch its focus to a more suitable competitor for their next game.
The women’s volleyball team next faces Citrus College, on Tuesday, at Citrus who has the identical conference record as Pierce, 2-3.

“We needed this win. We have a very good chance of finishing 3-3 through the first half of conference.”

Citrus and Pierce match up well. They have beaten the same teams as Pierce in the conference as Pierce, Santa Monica College and West L.A., and have both lost to Glendale College.

“Our practices from the last week have just been unbelievable,” said Brad Lyans Pierce College Assistant Coach, “the girls have come in with a new mind set.”

“I’m looking forward to finishing the first round , hopefully with a win,” said Mardini.
Pierce will play for the tie breaker Tuesday at Citrus.

“We are playing better volleyball.” said Lyans.

Pierce will have to continue to play better throughout the conference if they expect to make the state playoffs.
