At the Jan. 24 Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees meeting, Associated Students Organization President Abraham White disclosed a program that would involve the renting of expensive textbooks.
The program will provide the opportunity for students to rent the most expensive books by paying a small amount to use them for the entire semester.
The idea is to identify the most expensive and most used books by meeting with professors to decide which ones would be used in the program.
“This can be most beneficial for students,” said White.
Also discussed was a “book swap” program, which allows students to switch their books with each other at the end of the semester.
“I would love something like this because I would spend less money on books that are way too expensive,” said third year student Dolores Islas.
Like many students, she finds her books outside of the campus bookstore to save money.
“I buy all my real expensive books from half.com or flyers that students post around campus,” said Islas.
The textbook rental program is still a still a pending due to the time and money that would go into it.
“We don’t want to have to wait to start saving students money on textbooks and want to do everything we can now to make college more affordable for Pierce students,” said White.
As for “book swap,” there is a Web site that students can go to for more information: campusbookswap.com.
