Murphy’s Law is the only way to describe what happened to the Pierce baseball team in an embarrassing loss to Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday afternoon.
The Mounties came to Kelly Field and beat the Brahmas with a final score of 22-4.
Mt. SAC was led by sophomore pitcher Danny Diaz who threw a solid six innings allowing only a single run on two hits and collected seven strike outs.
The Brahmas however had a nightmare of a game. Coach John Bushart had to go deep into his bullpen using up a total of seven pitchers to find an answer against the Mounties.
“Our pitching was horrendous.” said Bushart about the heavy usage of his bullpen for the game.
Pierce’s pitching combined to give up 22 runs on 12 hits with six walks and seven batters were hit by pitches. The Brahmas gave up an unruly 10 runs in the seventh inning.
First baseman Alex Sawleson mentioned that “someone needs to step up outside of Schauer and Sesma.”
Assistant Coach Eric Bloom discussed that starting pitcher freshman Elliot Keene, although he struggled early, did his job in forcing ground balls.
“He needed his defense behind him.” said Bloom.
The Brahmas literally dropped the ball for Keene committing nine errors giving up 10 unearned runs out of the total 22 put on the scoreboard by Mt. SAC.
Shortstop Michael Hymes and second baseman Michael Colon combined for five of the nine errors.
Despite the terrible first 6.5 innings Pierce never gave up. Scoring three of their four runs in the seventh and eighth inning.
Although it was not a day the Brahmas want to remember, pitchers Boyd Bell and Arthur Chavez were the lowly bright spots out of the bullpen giving three shutout innings with three strikeouts.
On a side note from the game, Freshman Bobby Schauer, along with Robert Hurtado from LA Harbor College, were named SOCAL player of the week according to the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association. Schauer so far has a 2-0 record with an impressive 0.00 ERA in his two starts.
