The Pierce College women’s volleyball team did not have its best game, but it was enough to defeat Citrus College in straight set sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-14).

The women’s volleyball team once again had problems with their hitting as they committed several errors in the first two sets, but the defense held its own to give the Brahmas their third victory of the year. Head coach Nabil Mardini wasn’t impressed with his team’s overall effort, who plays a very competitive Grossmont College team in their upcoming second game of the day.

“We need to definitely play better,” Mardini said. “If we play like this against Grossmont, we’re going to get beat for sure.”

The Brahmas did do a better job serving during the game, and that kept the Owls at bay for most of the game.

“We’re really just trying to work through some things together as a team, but our serving I thought was more consistent,” freshman outside hitter Alexandra Bowman said.

Pierce played with more confidence in the third set with a combined effort from Autumn Russell (who was dynamic in her hitting against Citrus) and from freshman Darrin Rice (who played well after getting her first start at libero).

“That third set I thought we did a better job of communicating, the back to the front,” Rice said. “We just need to continue to work together as a team, but I think we are also starting to get a lot more comfortable with each other.”

The Brahmas play host to Grossmont College later today at 5:30 p.m.
