The Pierce College Umoja program hosted the “Cocoa, Cookies and Culture” event at the Multicultural Center on Thursday, in order to celebrate Black History Month. Students played a game of Kahoot, won goodies and enjoyed hot chocolate with cookies.
Umoja Club President Alicia Lewis expressed that hosting such events can make history lessons exciting.
“It is important to have an event like this,” Lewis said. “So, the rest of the school can learn more about our culture, and it also gives people in our own culture who do not know very much a history lesson, but in a fun way.”
Pierce student Luna Choi shared the highlight of the event.
“The cookies and hot chocolate are probably the highlight of this event,” Choi said. “It is very cold and rainy, and I think the hot chocolate was a nice supplement.”
Pierce student Sevn Naivaa added what he found exciting about the event.
“The challenge of learning about more Black culture and experiencing more people and more names,” Naivaa said.
The attendees enjoyed the arrangement of this event and shared what motivated them to be a part of it.
“I think it’s great, the arrangement, and it’s beautiful to do stuff like this because it makes people feel warm, a sense of family and a sense of love,” Naivaa said. “I am always grateful when I get to come together.”
Lewis expressed how the attendees learned from the event.
“I hope they leave with more knowledge about our culture and a sense of belonging a little bit because we want everybody to feel included,” said Lewis. “So, I just want everybody to leave with a good idea of what we come together in this room for.”
