Film Club screens its second film of the semester

Pierce College’s Film Club screened “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the Great Hall on April 30

The movie was a passion project for the director duo, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert. The audience and panelists debated whether the 40-minute climax part of the film was necessary.

President of the Film Club Justin Mathew Bautista explained the importance of the climax scene and how it being a passion project movie separates it from others.

“Some people believe it’s excessive, and I do agree. What makes this so special is that it has a heart. It has a soul,” Bautista said. “These characters are meant to stick with you, make you reflect not just on the themes of the film, but also on just different parts of your life, because especially with that climax scene, it it wasn’t just addressing Evelyn’s [character] relationship but also with the people around her from different universes, how she’s wrong, how her need for control has adversely affected them,”

Adviser of the film club Kenneth Windrum disagrees and stated his thoughts on the movie.

“That climax lasts for 40 minutes, don’t mind excess, but this feels like it’s just beyond excess. It’s like being on a roller coaster, after a while roller coasters don’t go for two and a half hours,” Windrum said. “At the beginning, when she’s [Character] got all these things that she says she does for a business, that’s the beginning of that notion. Those are multiple identities, which we will then see explored. I like the content, I just don’t like the way they direct it.”

President of the Psychology Club Mordecai Lopez watched the movie for the first time and shares his thoughts on the climax scene.

“I agree it was overwhelming in terms of the editing [and] what’s happening in the film, even the way jokes are constantly flying out,” Lopez said. “There’s also really heavy emotional interactions between all the characters, it’s very ambitious. I agree the climax is a little long, but overall it was a lot but I thought it pulled it off really well.”

The film club will show their next movie “Bottoms” on May 5, at 2:30 P.M. at the Great Hall.
