Pierce offers refuge

Once again, Pierce College students, including the Boots and Saddle club, came to the rescue of many equine animals, helping to relieve some of the stress placed on the owners of horses, donkeys and goats.

Ravaging thousands of acres and displacing people in its wake, the recent eruption of fires has caused an enormous amount of damage.

On Oct. 21, the Pre Vet Tech club cancelled their pet clinic when they found out the Pierce farm facilities were needed for a more urgent matter.

In times of little warning and forced evacuation, fleeing with the possibility of returning to shambles would be a traumatic experience for anyone.

Grabbing one’s most valuable possessions and searching for a shelter is difficult enough without having to worry about herding farm animals to safety.

This is not the first time Pierce has offered its equestrian center for animals in danger of the blazing flames. Over the years, the college administration, the city and the county have worked together to form a dependable emergency system for times such as these.

A community’s collective survival is reliant on the individuals who are not directly affected by the disaster, but who choose to become directly affected by lending their hands.

To the members of the Boots and Saddle club, Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control Volunteer Equine Response Team, L.A. County Sheriffs’ Department and to all the other individuals who sacrificed their time for the monetarily intangible reward of giving, we say “Thank you.”

You are an important part of our community, and what may seem like a minimal donation of your time is monumentally life changing for those in need. Now that the smoke has cleared let’s not forget how much we all rely on the generosity and strength of others.
