Increasing gas prices shouldn’t make me seek another part- time job.
In the past year, costs have increased immensely.
This affects not only college students, but the general population. Just one week ago, a 7-cent increment for every gallon of regular, unleaded and diesel fuel was implemented at various gas stations.
How am I supposed to manage school, work and a social life when I have to pay $40 to $50 a week for gas?
Filling up my tank costs just as much as a pair of BCBG heels on sale.
Sure, obtaining a gas card was great- until I maxed it out within the first month and until interest rates started kicking in, to a massive 30 percent.
Being in college, I’ve amounted credit card debt in the thousands and find myself deeper in debt as I struggle to get out of it.
Sometimes I’m so caught up cramming for a test I forget to pay bills and it could possibly affect my credit in the future.
I’m not willing to get loans to consolidate my debt, fearing the interest rates, so work is more likely.
I’ve been keeping tabs with both my parents since high school a few years ago.
Like most college students I know, I’ve found the simple luxuries in life are diminishing in my every day routine.
Sleep is minimal, coffee is a daily amenity, studying is never-ending and I find my laptop my best friend these days.
Some things I could try are other alternatives to save my hard-earned income.
Walking to class. I sure am a girly girl not willing to throw on my sneakers and bust a mini trip down De Soto Avenue to get to Victory Boulevard and Mason Avenue.
The Metro? Well, that includes a short walk too, which is not on my agenda, so let’s scratch that out.
With the weather heating up I can’t endure sweating it up under the scorching sun these days.
Carpooling is a maybe. Everyone I know lives close. So maybe I like the lavishness of driving everywhere but gas prices are setting me back.
With gas prices starting at $3.55 a gallon, I need to take on more hours at work, cut down on the shopping and eat more at home.
Everything includes sacrifice; these are a few of what we, as students, encounter in college at any rate.
The rainy day has come and my pennies are saved up.
