First colleges want to force you to pay hundreds of dollars for textbooks and now they want to listen in on what is happening in the classroom? Invasion of privacy is a crime the last time I checked. The purpose for the new intercom systems is a safety precaution.
Pierce parking proves problematic
The parking situation has always been bad at Pierce. This not news. What is news is it’s going to get worse. Parking Lot 1, in front of the Administration Building, will be closed for repairs beginning October 1. Thankfully, this isn’t a permanent closure but the effect will be painful for as long as it’s closed.
rough: Welcome Day? Hard To Say
From fashion to food, from rap to poetry and from prizes to snow cones helped create a Welcome Day for the tall, the small, the skinny, the big, the bald, the hairy, and, of course, me. Welcome day was a day where students came to eat, showcase their talent, educate themselves on clubs, and “a central area where people come together and kickback,” said Christine Nguyen, 20.
First-place Brahmas dig through Palomar
The sound of palm on leather left a ringing in the ears of the Comets as the Pierce College women’s volleyball team defeated their opponents from Palomar College, 3-1, last night in the South Gym. Outside hitters Janet Alvarado and Sarah Martin led the Brahma attack, each recording 13 kills with Martin recording three aces, while libero Ashley Clark paced the defense with seven digs, raising her Western State Conference lead in that category to 106 on the season.
Orientation Web site due for an overhaul
A make over is in store for the Pierce College online orientation program, due to receive an update next year that will make the site more user-friendly and accessible. The new online orientation program will include student testimonials regarding classes and campus life, but the most important upgrade will be accessibility by hearing or visually impaired students, an addition made in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Two new deans appointed at Pierce College
Two new deans, Jose Luis Fernandez, dean of career and technical education, and Barbara Anderson, dean of academic affairs, were appointed on Aug. 11 and Sept. 1, respectively, at Pierce College. Fernandez worked as dean of vocational education at Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.
Western nurses meet Eastern medicine
Patients rest outside a medical clinic in a park-like setting. There is no air conditioning in the rooms, just open windows to keep the air circulating. Doctors visit a patient sitting in the lotus position while, down the hall, someone is being “cupped.” This is a common sight if you live in China, but not quite so common if you are Pierce College nursing professors Dr.
New equipment essential for earthquake survival
There is a 99.7 percent chance that California will experience a large-scale earthquake within the next 30 years, scientists determined in a recent report. Is Pierce College prepared to handle a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake?
Paved farm road adds modern feel, easier access
Many decades ago there was no Warner Center, Victory Boulevard or even Pierce College. Today we are an expanding world and a growing economy. Steps have to be made to accommodate for our growing community at Pierce. Improvements were made last semester for our past ware and tear on our farm road.
