SEPT. 2, 2008 — Students trying to deal with back-to-school disarray may find this semester less stressful thanks to the opening of the new 700-space Parking Lot 8 and the addition of a disabled-student van service. The van service – which will continue indefinitely – will include the new lot, located off El Rancho Drive, as one of the six pickup points.

Did you miss Comic-Con 2008?
Hollywood, comic books, video games and fans from all walks of life collided again in the San Diego Convention Center for one of the largest entertainment gatherings in the world – the 39th annual Comic-Con International. Comic-Con, which took place from the July 23 Preview Night through July 26, is a nonprofit event intended to educate and create awareness of and appreciation for comics and their related popular art forms.
Human nature exposed in revisited Broadway musical
The dark irony of Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical has been not only preserved but greatly amplified in the presentation by the L.A. Pierce College Theatre Arts Department, a chilling rendition that carries the viewer through Dr. Henry Jekyll’s ill-fated yet impassioned hunt for a method to isolate – and ultimately eliminate – evil from the human nature.

CONSTRUCTION The various construction projects scattered around campus will all contribute to what construction director David Tsao calls a “brand new facelift” for Pierce College. It was a busy year for building, since the new projects have completed the design stage and have begun to be physically realized.
Foundation commits $70 million to CCC
California Community Colleges received an unprecedented $70 million commitment from the Bernard Osher Foundation May 6. “The more we looked into the higher education community, the more we’ve convinced ourselves of the need of the community college system,” said Mary Bitterman, president of the Bernard Osher Foundation.
Child airlifted off Pierce campus
A child was airlifted out of Pierce College after a Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter landed on the soccer field around 7:15 p.m.
While the age and condition of the child was unavailable, Officer Morales of the Pierce Sheriff’s Office said the incident was unrelated to Pierce.
New building taking shape as ‘symbol of Pierce’
The last steel beam of the new Student Services Building was signed by involved project members at a “topping off” ceremony yesterday, commemorating the beginning of a new phase toward the year-away completion of the $18 million building.

Students opt to stay out of debt with self discipline
Growing up, most young people no longer spend mom and dad’s money. However, they get credit cards to substitute for what they are no longer getting. Although the cost of going to college can amount to ridiculously high prices, including everything from transportation to books and laptop computers, it is become easier for students to get credit cards – and dig themselves into huge pits of debt.
