Teaching since ’87, Larry Andre brings a load of experience with him to any campus he teaches. Students return to take his classes coming from previous classes since. It’s his teaching style that intrigues students to keep taking his classes. “I teach students to write their own philosophy,” said Andre.

(REVISED) Pierce College Council Meeting
The Pierce College Council met on Nov. 29, to discuss information on the Student Success Committee and several other items on the agenda. Joy McCaslin, who represents the administration and is an executive member of the PCC, informed the collegial council on ideas to help students at Pierce with finishing their educational goals.
Pierce Blood Drive: Students saving lives
The American Red Cross and the Pierce College Associated Students Organization partnered up to give students and volunteers the opportunity to save the lives of many Californians. The Pierce blood drive took place on Nov. 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and gave participants a chance to win a $500 cash prize.

As the Corral fire raged in Malibu, Pierce College’s Equestrian Center was the center of large animal rescue once again, a mere five weeks after the last Malibu fire. Volunteer horse “haulers” and the Los Angeles County Emergency Response Team (ERT) for animals brought in horses, ponies, goats, sheep, miniature donkeys and chickens.
Emergency box abuse
Code blue emergency is the name of the Pierce College safety system that is going through an investigation to be upgraded. The blue box system is triggered by fake calls more than it is by real emergencies. If you take a walk around all 427 acres of the Pierce campus, you will notice a pattern of 22 blue emergency boxes scattered throughout the grounds.
Counselors help students navigate the road to graduation
The sterile room is quiet, with blue chairs lining the walls and anxious students looking over papers. Above them, a poster hangs with the quote, “You measure the size of accomplishments by the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goals.” This is the waiting room for the counseling office and where most Pierce College students begin their long journey to graduation.
A popping social scene for teachers
Follow the pleasant aroma of freshly-popped buttery popcorn downstairs from the Pierce College library and you will find the Faculty Staff Resource Center (FSRC). Opened in July, the center provides staff and faculty, both part time and full time, a place to complete classroom preparations, hang out with other faculty members or just enjoy some peace, quiet and popcorn.

Policy to protect freedom
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) diversity program published a combination policy of discrimination and harassment to eliminate ethnic taboos and stereotypes that hinder academic freedom in September. The Prohibited Discrimination and Harassment Policy summary defines discrimination and harassment as a violation of state or federal law on the basis of color, sex, ancestry, sexual orientation, race, medical condition, marital status and veteran status.
Professionalism urged by professors
The Pierce College Academic Senate gathered on November 19 to discuss a multitude of topics concerning the campus and its students. With the many topics discussed at the meeting, student e-mail addresses’ was amongst the most talked about by the teachers on the senate.
