Tapping into Depleting Funds
The iTap program will end Fall 2011 due to a lack of sufficient funds, according to Associated Students Organization President Nick Naczinski.
The program, funded by the Los Angeles Community College District, provides public transit passes for full-time students for $20.
In an attempt to stretch funds, the pass is now offered for the duration of a regular semester rather than the original 6-month period.
A proposed solution has been to charge students a fee of $43 for Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 regardless of whether or not they use pubic transportation.
Students will be able to vote on this solution which will likely not pass, according to Naczinki.
“As much as it’s an advantage for us, it’s not fair,” said freshman nursing major and iTap user, Talisa Tan.
Students will still be able to purchase a regular Metro student pass for $36 per month.
