Women’s volleyball team ekes out win over crosstown rival COC

Pierce College women’s volleyball team, ranked number two in the state, eked out a win Tuesday night over cross town rival College of the Canyons (COC).

In the five game series the Brahmas lead by Julianna Hicks and Sarah Martin won three of five games.

The Brahmas played hard in game number one looking like a well oiled machine and won 25-21.

Riding high on victory the Brahmas trounced COC in game two, 25-12.

In game three the Brahmas took an early lead, 8-6 but then they fell behind to lose the game, 23-25.

Game four saw the women’s volleyball team fraying at the edges as the long night began to take its toll. Shayna Guitare injured her knee and had to be helped off the court.  Concern over their injured teammate overcame the team and they lost again, 25-18.

Game five found the Brahmas with grim determination to win which they did with style ending the game 15-14.

“It’s a grind out type of win, but we don’t mind that.  An ugly win is better than a loss any day,” said head coach Nabil Mardini.

Every team has their own way of dealing with this kind of situation, usually resulting with one guy edging out the other and taking control. Obviously this has not happened here as both remain equals in the eyes of the coaches and more importantly, their teammates.
