A child was airlifted out of Pierce College after a Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter landed on the soccer field around 7:15 p.m. While the age and condition of the child was unavailable, Officer Morales of the Pierce Sheriff’s Office said the incident was unrelated to Pierce.
When Marv Dunphy steps onto the floor at Firestone Fieldhouse to begin his 26th season at the helm of the Pepperdine University Waves men’s volleyball team, it will be just another day at the office-at least to him. Dunphy will have held practice with his latest squad, will have gotten re-acquainted with his returners, and will have gotten to know his new recruits, just like all of his opposing coaches.
The women’s volleyball team began their season with a 3-0 victory in tonight’s match against San Bernardino, picking up last season’s flag after winning last year’s Western State Conference. The team won the first set, 25-11; the second set, 25-20; and the third set, 25-14.
President Bush signed revisions of the Higher Education Act into law, allowing students to recieve the Pell Grant year-round and increased aid.
What it is about is that Pierce is trying out a new program in trying to keep the campus clean and helping the environment as well.
Head coach Efrain Martinez will be starting freshman Taylor Budd as quarterback to replace Justin Collins, who suffered a broken femur during the Saturday-night game against Moorpark College.
The women’s volleyball team won the Las Vegas Women’s Volleyball tournament Sept. 5 and 6. This is the first time they’ve won the tournament in four years. The Lady Brahmas had to beat Salt Lake, ranked sixth in the nation, twice to get into the championship match. They defeated College of Southern Idaho, ranked three in the nation, 4-1 to win the tournament.
The women’s soccer team competed in the Victor Valley Soccer Tournament Sept. 6 and 7. They tied Sierra the first day 1-1, but lost in penalty kicks. They won the second game of the first day, beating Antelope Valley 4-0. The final day of the tournament, the Brahmas lost 5-0 to Victor Valley. The team plays twice this week; Moorpark on Tuesday and Cuyamaca College on Friday. Both games are away.
