Making it to the playoffs as one of the top two tennis teams, Pierce College ended its season, 7-3. Many came in as new players, including the No. 1 player at Pierce, 18-year-old freshman Kostya Omelyanchuk. “I bring confidence to the team,” he stated. Omelyanchuk hasn’t decided if he will continue to play tennis next year, as he may work and will have no time to devote to the team.
A season of turnover, a season of pitfalls and of surges, and a season that came up just short has come to a close for the Brahmas. Pierce College finished the 2008 baseball season fourth in the Western State Conference with a conference record of 15-13 and an overall record of 24-20.

According to the Western calendar that is used in the U.S., May 14 marks the 60th anniversary of Israel, when celebrations take place throughout the beautiful state.
Madonna’s latest album, “Hard Candy,” proved once again that she is invincible and that there are no boundaries surrounding her music. With its American debut April 29, the album sold 100,000 copies on its first day of release in the U.S. alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
“The teacher hates me.” “I didn’t know we were supposed to do that!” “This grading is so unfair.” Exclamations like these are heard in classrooms around the world, sometimes with sincere concern. Yet many students fail to take such complaints to a meaningful level.
Buried in the general catalog lies the Pierce College mission statement, which contains a promise to dedicate all resources to ensure students achieve their educational, career and personal goals. Among those is the desire to transfer from Pierce to a four-year university, preferably in two years.
Pierce College student Trish Loughnane, who made it on the All-California Academic Team of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honors society for two-year colleges, was recognized for her achievements. Graduating in June, Loughnane has maintained a 3.5 GPA during her five years at Pierce and is leaving with an A.
Jack Scott, former Pasadena City College president, was named chancellor of the California Community Colleges Thursday. Scott will replace Diane Woodruff Jan. 1, when his term as state senator ends. Woodruff has been interim chancellor since July 2007. Scott will take over the 109-campus CCC in a critical time of the state budget crisis.
The funding provided to California Community Colleges has rarely been the amount promised, but Assembly Bill 2277, introduced by Assemblyman Mike Eng, hopes to lay the groundwork that will prevent future shortfalls. This bill has been put on the state’s “suspense file,” but will be reconsidered this month, according to the Community College League of California.
