Students looking to earn college credit without investing several hours in class each week may find Pierce’s Credit-by-Exam option to be their perfect solution. Through April 21, students can petition to take an examination equivalent to a final and receive course credit for the same $26 per unit as a regular class.
Artist Renee Amitai recently displayed her work in St.Petersburg, Russia and in June exhibited at the Sorbonne in Paris before becoming involved in the “OFF-PLANET” exhibit at the Pierce College Art Gallery. Amitai, who was educated Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris and Ecole Des Metiers D’Artes et Architecture in Paris spent her early career working as an architect in France and for Club Med.
Artist Barbara Lai Bennett, 59, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the influence of her birthplace is evident in much of her work. Currently exhibiting works at the Pierce College Art Gallery’s “OFF-PLANET” exhibition, Bennett has painted several pieces that explored her view of the cosmos with an eye from Hawaii.
To stir up excitement for the 2006 season, the Los Angeles Dodgers “Community Caravan” visited Pierce College to promote the game of baseball and the importance of succeeding in school. Closer and 2003 Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne, general manager Ned Colletti, manager Grady Little, five-time all-star Nomar Garciaparra and two-time National League Manager of the Year Tommy Lasorda were among the featured participants.
The Roundup has already published multiple articles declaring what we expected from our soon-to-be president before he was selected, just to remind the candidates of the responsibility that would be placed on their shoulders. Now that Robert Garber, a former Pierce College employee himself, has been chosen as president, our new leader has much to do to earn the good will of his constituents.
It is with a great deal pleasure that I welcome you to the Spring 2006 semester at Pierce. Whether you are a new, continuing or returning student, I hope you will find our beautiful campus and outstanding programs to be both engaging and fulfilling. Before the sun rises and most people have their first cup of coffee, Pierce football player Galen Osborne is awake and ready to start his two-hour commute from South Los Angeles to Pierce College. His day starts at 5:45 a.m. when he boards the first of four buses and one train he takes to school five days a week.
Spanish teacher Fernando Oleas is giving back to his community what he feels was given to him. Oleas switched from part to full-time teaching during the 2005 winter semester. The 41 year-old Spanish teacher also organizes activities such as the open readings.
The swim team has the formula to take Pierce College to the top of the swim league and break some old swim records at the same time. Every weekday the women’s swim team practices in the water for two hours which equates to about two to four miles each day to enhance endurance and speed; they also meet on Saturdays.
Parking lot assault: Jan. 11 10:15 a.m.: Two suspects assaulted victim, striking him several times while stealing his baseball hat in Lot 7. When one of the suspects took the hat from the victim’s head, the victim resisted, which prompted the suspects to assault him, one striking him in the jaw several times, the other suspect striking him in the back of the head.
