The Pierce College Cheerleading Team selected its five newest members recently to support the five returning members. It is time for training and time to build up their cheerleading skills with Coach J.Q. Johnson who has been coaching the team since 2001.
When Louisiana was devastated with one of the worst natural disasters in American history, volunteers from the world community created a force stronger than any hurricane to rebuild what hurricanes Rita and Katrina had destroyed in September 2005. During the winter break, Diane Levine, Pierce College anthropology teacher was inspired to help hurricane victims in western Louisiana through an organization she found on the Internet called Southern Mutual Help Association (SMHA).
The position of Athletic Director for Pierce College is up for grabs with Bob Lyons’ decision to return to teaching full-time at the end of the spring season after 11 years in the position. “Lyons has done the job a long time and it is a demanding job. “I have great respect for him,” said Nabil Abu-Ghazeleh, vice president of academic affairs.
Coming out of pre-season with a 1-9 win-loss record, Pat Grennan, head coach of the Pierce College Softball team since 1999, remains optimistic about the coming season despite a tough pre-season. “We’ve played some really good teams and I set that up that way so we’d go up against tough teams.
At the beginning of every semester Pierce College looks like the hottest hangout in town, considering that both the Winnetka and Mason Avenue parking lots are overflowing. It goes to show how many students are interested in taking classes at our dear school.
What happened? We may never know. It was the best basketball season Pierce College had in decades, with both the men’s and women’s teams heading to the state playoffs and probably going deep in the bracket. Instead, they were both forced to forfeit all but one of their games because of eligibility forms that were not correctly sent to the Commission on Athletics (COA) in Sacramento.
The results are in! Following the March 6 election, Sylvia Scott-Hayes, Mona Field and Warren Furutani have successfully retained their seats on the L.A. Community College District (LACCD) board of trustees. But Georgia Mercer, newly-appointed LACCD board president and the incumbent to Seat Five, must face opponent Roy Burns in a run-off election scheduled for May 15, 2007.

Directed by Gene Putnam, an 18-year Pierce professor of theatre arts, this comedy farce should send its viewers off laughing as 17 cast members take them on a romantic journey.
Humberto “Bert” Sanchez, 59, associate professor of business administration, died Friday at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks of unknown causes. “It’s pretty grim,” said Professor David Braun, business department chair. “There are a lot of sad, sad people around here.
